My Approach to Couple’s and Individual Therapy

WarmheadshotrainbowHi, I’m Will (He, Him) – a member of the Queer community

Are you looking for a kind, funny, and experienced LGBTQIA+ therapist who is also a member of the queer community? If you are LGBTQIA+ and need a safe space to explore who you are right now, I am the person for you.

You’re queer, and I’m queer – We are here. Let’s chat.

As queer people, we all suffer from minority stress due to our sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Every time there is a headline in the news about a queer person attacked, disowned, or unjustly imprisoned, it stirs in us a deep-seated fear that our very life is at stake.

Even after we come out and have dealt with our shame, we may find managing our emotions and behaviors forever challenging and disruptive. That inner voice of harmful self-talk rises from deep within, screams our unworthiness, and is all we hear. That is the trauma of queer life that brings you to me.

Let’s work to overcome the challenges in your life.

I am a Gay Psychotherapist, and I must warn you that I can be rather outlandish. I love to listen to and spill the tea. Therapy is sometimes emotionally painful, peacefully healing, and damn stinking funny. When you are in therapy with me as your guide, you will experience emotional support at every step.

As a queer therapist, I find great joy in helping other queers recover from painful times and deal with daily life stress that queers face for simply existing as queer in hetero-normative spaces.

My specialty is dealing with and resolving issues that surface through the coming-out process. I will be your guide, whether you are coming out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans or non-binary, or any other sexual orientation or identity. Even if you came out years or decades ago, you might suffer from unresolved issues related to the trauma of living closeted.

For the last two years, I have worked full-time as a psychotherapist specializing in treating issues faced by queer people. In my practice, I focus on trauma care, anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, and problems with gender identity and sexual orientation. I also work with individuals and couples. My clients include queer people, BIPOC individuals, and the trans and non-binary community.

About Will

Dsc 2342 EditI really want to get to know you.

My approach as your therapist is to get to know you – all of you, including your dreams, fears, traumas, motivations, worries, and secrets. We will start building a plan to help you learn to manage your emotions and behaviors. There is no one perfect approach to therapy because the approach depends on where you are and where you want to go.

If you seek gender-affirming care to manage the stress of transitioning, which often includes how to come out to friends and family, not to mention the stress of transitioning at work, I can help you deal with the transition.

Here’s a little about my training and expertise.

My formal education includes a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Family Studies from Weber State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Social Work from Brigham Young University.

My therapy training is eclectic and includes the following modalities: Dialectical Behavior Training for depression, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy for Trauma, and Cognitive-Behavioral Training. Currently, I am in an Internal Family Systems approach to trauma and PTSD program. I am a WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) member and follow the WPATH Standards of Care 8.

It is essential that all queer people understand queer sexual health and how it impacts our mental health. Therefore, I also have training in LGBTQ-Affirmative therapy.

When I’m not working…

I have shared the last 20 years of my life with the most amazing person, my spouse, Bill, and, yes, we are Will and Bill. Bill and I met the old-fashioned way. We were introduced to each other by mutual friends, and then we got married the old-fashioned way by fleeing to Canada to wed in 2005. Together, we raised four children with the help of their mother and her husband.

I am a social justice advocate who volunteers on election campaigns, attends protest marches, and hosts fundraisers in the home I share with Bill. Our travels have taken us around the world. There is always a new place to see and new people to meet.

Fun fact about me: I am a retired professional barrel racer. Click here to see the video.

Bill and I share our life with Bindi, a Pembrook Welsh Corgi, who sleeps at my feet through all my sessions. My self-care includes swimming, walking, listening to books on tape while walking, practicing mindfulness, and sharing meals with people I love.
